How to make the Super Mario coin sound effect

Whether you’re playing an adventure game, side scroller, or any of the classic Super Mario games, coin sound effects are important because they give the player a sense of achievement. When I was working on my 8-bit sound pack, I wanted to create coin sounds as I knew they played a major role in these types of games. In the process of creating coin sounds, I discovered how to closely recreate the Super Mario coin sound effect.

The way to create the Super Mario coin sound is by playing an octave or 4th interval upwards at a fast tempo. Use a square wave from a synthesizer and edit the decay value (or release) to the desired length. Place the synth in mono so that only 1 note plays at a time. Add some desired effects such as  chorus, bit crushing, and reverb. That’s it!

What You'll Need

  1. A synth with a square wave oscillator. We’ll be using Massive by NI in this tutorial.

If you don’t have any of these tools, check out this page HERE where you can find many free synths to get started. Look for synths that have a noise oscillator like the Fathom Mono by Seaweed Audio and the Burt 2.0 by Noisebud.
