How to Make An 8-Bit Punch Sound Effect

Just as weapon sounds can define a game, so can hits, punches, and kicks for games that have only melee combat as their primary combat system. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to include kick and punch sounds in my 8-bit sound pack.

Through my experimentation I found that 8-bit punch sound effects can be created using any synth with a noise oscillator. Reduce the envelope’s decay to shorten the length of the punch. Add some bit crushing and sample hold to create that classic gritty retro sound. Finally, add your desired effects to make it sound just the way you want.

What You'll Need

  1. A synth with a noise oscillator. We’ll be using Massive by NI in this tutorial.

If you don’t have any of these tools, check out this page HERE where you can find many free synths to get started. Look for synths that have a noise oscillator like the Fathom Mono by Seaweed Audio and the Burt 2.0 by Noisebud.
