How to Make an 8-Bit Jump Sound Effect

Have you ever wanted to recreate the classic Super Mario jump sound effect? With some trial and error and a bit of experimentation I figured out how to create an 8-bit jump sound effect that is very similar.

To create an 8-bit jump sound effect you will want to modulate the pitch of a sine wave oscillator or square wave oscillator. This can be accomplished by using an LFO. Assign the LFO to the oscillators pitch.  Edit that the decay value of the oscillator’s envelope to get the desired length of the jump sound. With this in place, add your desired effects and you have a basic 8-bit jump sound effect.

What You'll Need

  1. A synth with a noise oscillator. We’ll be using Massive by NI in this tutorial.

If you don’t have any of these tools, check out this page HERE where you can find many free synths to get started. Look for synths that have a noise oscillator like the Fathom Mono by Seaweed Audio and the Burt 2.0 by Noisebud.
