Creating a Synthetic Creature Sound Effect from Scratch
Today, I’m excited to show you how to create a synthetic creature sound effect from scratch. In this video, we’ll be using Phase Plant to create our sound. I’ll be taking you through every step, and by the end, you’ll have a creature sound that you can use in your projects.
Creating the Sound
Let’s begin by creating a wavetable using the “create from sample” feature in Phase Plant. We can use a set of pre-recorded sounds, like screams and shrieks, as a base for the wavetable. After that, we can add an LFO to modulate the wavetable. We can experiment with different phase alignments to get different results, which will help us select a sound that we like.
Modulating the Sound
Once our custom wavetable is set and ready to use, we can now add a  new wavetable to use to modulate the phase of the first wavetable (FM Synthesis). I like to modulate with a triangle waveform which will give us a buzzy character. We can assign the volume of the FM synth to our mod wheel in order to control it from our keyboard. Now we can experiment with the settings to get the desired effect.
Adding Unison, Distortion, and OTT
To add more depth to the sound, we can add a unison to first wavetable we created. I like to blend the unison with the original sound to create something more interesting. We can also add some distortion to give our sound a unique texture. Additionally, we can add OTT and Uberloud which will give us a fuller sound.
Adding Creature Samples
Finally, I’ll add a sampler and import a monster or creature sound effect to layer with our designed sound.
