In this video, I demonstrate and share how to design a wood-shattering sound effect. I did this by redesigning the wooden barrel sounds from the video game God of War.

The main concept behind this video is that sometimes you start with the obvious sounds for a design (in this instance, wood) but sometimes, that’s not enough. What I then like to do is ask myself “what other characteristics of the sound do I want in my redesign and what other sounds could I use that have those characteristics?”

What’s cool is that it doesn’t need to be a sound in the same category as what you are designing. It can be something completely different.

That’s what I did in my redesign. I used wood samples, yes, but also designed impacts, designed tearing sounds, and a few others. Layered together, the final sound is really good.
