Dual S-Layer Sound Design Technique

Creating Unique Sounds with S-Layer
In my opinion, every sound designer should have S-layer. It is a simple to use software that allows you to layer sound to create your own unique sound design combinations. The programming includes sample maps and existing sample libraries.
It provides the ability to randomize and use sliders and toggle controls to edit different layers and parameters of the sound.
The Dual Layer Sound Design Technique
This is a simple, yet incredibly useful, technique that I learned from the sound designers behind the game, “League of Legends.” I call it the dual S-layer technique, where you can use two versions of S-layer to create a more complex sound. Here’s the step-by-step to help you create some really cool sounds.
- Open up two versions (two screens) of S-layer.
- Map the randomize button on your midi keyboard for both versions of S-Layer to randomize your parameters (start, delay, pitch, pan, volume)
- Map your trigger button on both instances of S-Layer.
- Play both sounds together, starting at different times, to see how they react together. Use the triggers to randomize and create an entirely new sound.
- Experiment with 3 or 4 different versions to see what you come up with.
